I found out in early 2023, 15 years after I thought I had “beat” cancer, that it had returned to my bones. Right now, I look and feel pretty good. But it is hard living in “the in-between” (a term I heard from author Katie Bower). I’m not actually dying AT THIS MOMENT, but I do have a terminal illness and every 3 months I find out if it’s started spreading again. The anger and fear and resignation and uncertainty that is always present can stay unseen, and may be unspoken, until either the cancer damage or the treatment side effects make it impossible for others to ignore. It’s not that wonderful when people say “You look great!” with that touch of surprise meaning “You don’t LOOK like you’re dying…”
