Help Keep Me in the Picture

Metastatic breast cancer (MBC) is breast cancer that has spread from the breast to other parts of the body – the liver, lung, brain, bones or other organs – and while there are treatment options, there is no cure.  In the US, MBC takes the lives of 41,000 women and 500 men each year.  In spite of the fact that MBC is the primary cause of death from breast cancer, it is understudied and underfunded. Help Keep Me in The Picture is a public campaign to bring awareness to MBC. People will be invited to learn more through fact-cards and by sharing stories of people living with MBC, but the most important piece of the campaign is to collect signatures to petition Congress to take necessary steps to recognize all those living with the disease.

Those living with MBC often feel left out, lost in the campaigns for breast cancer awareness, screening and early detection. The MBC Alliance was formed in 2013 and today is a coalition of more than 40 groups and individuals, including nonprofit organizations, people living with MBC, pharmaceutical companies and advocates working together to make advances against MBC and address the needs of MBC patients.

Help Keep Me in the Picture is an initiative of the MBC Alliance that seeks to broaden the public’s understanding of this incurable disease and improve the lives of the women and men who live with it. The campaign includes a social media initiative and new microsite, KeepMeInThePicture.com, that shares facts and personal stories about the disease, as well as a petition to push Congress to give cancer registries such as the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the CDC’s National Program of Cancer Registries, the funds needed to collect accurate statistics for those with metastatic breast cancer.

Here are three ways YOU can support the “Help Keep Me in the Picture” Campaign:

  1. Share the social media campaign, a metastatic breast cancer story, or a fact to promote education on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by using the hashtag #SeeMetastaticBC
  2. Visit the microsite
  3. Sign the petition to give cancer registries like SEER and CDC the funds needed to collect accurate statistics for those with metastatic breast cancer

The MBC Alliance’s mission is to advance research about metastatic breast cancer, increase awareness about the disease and increase services to support people living with MBC.  While there has been tremendous progress over the last twenty-five years in the ongoing fight against breast cancer, more resources and research are needed for metastatic breast cancer. Please help by joining in our ‘Help Keep Me in the Picture’ campaign to ultimately advance research that is focused on extending life and enhancing the quality of life for those suffering from metastatic breast cancer.
