MYTH: Clinical trials are a last resort for treating MBC.

TRUTH: Clinical trials can optimize access to cutting-edge care.

One of the prevailing myths in the treatment of breast cancer is this thought that clinical trials are a last resort, or only for the end of life. But nothing could be farther from the truth.

Clinical trials are how we get access to new and innovative treatments—to participate in the science as it is happening. And no one talks enough about how once we’ve experienced several lines of therapy, we may be too “pre-treated” to qualify for clinical trials.

I’m participating in my 14th clinical trial right now, and I would urge anyone living with a serious or terminal diagnosis, like Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, to talk to your team about clinical trials every step of the way. Don’t wait.

This is an excellent way to be an active participant in our care, and not only receive standard-of-care treatments. We are all unique human beings and deserve personalized medicine. Clinical trials are a way to personalize your care, and that has been a really important part of my experience with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer.
