SUMMARY:BLACK WO(MEN) SPEAK SYMPOSIUM
DESCRIPTION:The Black Wo(Men) Speak Symposium was initiated as a response to the BECOME (Black Experience of Clinical Trials and Opportunities for Meaningful Engagement) survey conducted by the Metastatic Breast Cancer Alliance (MBCA) which found that 8 out of 10 Black people living with metastatic breast cancer would consider participating in clinical trials\, but that only 36% of those same people were receiving as much information as they wanted. \nThe MBCA is only one of four organizations that recently conducted similar research surveys. The three other organizations — TOUCH\, the Black Breast Cancer Alliance\, For the Breast of Us\, and Carrie’s TOUCH — along with The Missing Pink Breast Cancer Alliance are partnering with the MBCA to offer this important educational event. \nThe overarching goal of the Symposium is to educate the community-at-large — Healthcare Providers (HCPs); Pharma\, Researchers\, and Clinical Research Organizations (CROs); and Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) Patients\, Caregivers\, and Advocates — about the urgent need for greater diversity in clinical trials. By sharing and examining the data gathered in the four surveys\, the event aims to better inform its audience of the current barriers to clinical trial participation\, to inspire greater trust in the healthcare system to provide equitable care regardless of race\, and to ensure access to clinical trials to a population that is more representative of all patients. The Symposium also aims to empower the Black patient community to speak up regarding clinical trial options. \nThe day will begin with a keynote address by Dr. Lola Fayanju\, Chief of Breast Surgery at Penn Medicine\, on increasing diversity in clinical trials followed by a presentation of findings from the four research projects. The remainder of the agenda\, emceed by Dr. Monique Gary\, Medical Director of the Cancer Program at Grand View Health\, is being developed around the three topic areas/target audiences — HCPs\, clinical research\, and people living with MBC and their caregivers — and will feature speakers and panel discussions aimed at these groups. \nDownload an overview of the Symposium \nLearn more and register now! \n  \n

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Hereditary Breast Cancer and Genetic Testing
DESCRIPTION:Some breast cancers are thought to be hereditary\, caused by abnormal genes passed from parent to child. Most cases of hereditary breast cancer are associated with inherited mutations in two genes: BRCA1 (BReast CAncer gene one) and BRCA2 (BReast CAncer gene two). Together BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations account for about 25 to 30 percent of hereditary breast cancers\, and approximately three to six percent of all breast cancers. \nWhile all patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) face a complex and difficult journey\, those whose disease can be attributed to inherited gene mutations could face unique challenges. These can include\, but are not limited to\, lack of access to support services\, or genetic counseling. Importantly\, it also can include the weight of knowing that others in their family may be at risk. \nJoin us for a webinar with Dr. Lily Shahied Arruda\, Medical Director\, U.S. Medical Affairs at Pfizer Oncology\, when we will learn more about breast cancer patients’ experiences and knowledge of hereditary breast cancer and genetic testing. \nAdvance Registration is required to attend this webinar. Click on the “Register Now” button below to save your spot. \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \n[maxbutton id=”34″ url=”https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_MJw3ccEVS5yZ_oDBySBJ9Q” text=”REGISTER NOW!” ]

SUMMARY:MBCA WEBINAR: Clinical Trial Endpoints Survey Results
DESCRIPTION:Metastatic Breast Cancer Patient Input Regarding Clinical Trial Endpoints:\nUpdate on Research Advocacy Network Survey \nREGISTER HERE! \nEndpoints for clinical trials studying metastatic breast cancer (MBC)\, in particular the patient perspective\, has been the subject of much discussion in recent years. \nIn 2017\, the Research Advocacy Network (RAN) conducted focus groups with patients with MBC and an online session with MBC advocates to gather their input. Subsequently\, RAN conducted a survey meant to quantify patient perspectives. The focus was on gathering MBC patient viewpoints on the meaningfulness of concepts in clinical trial endpoints and to explore patient knowledge of language related to trial endpoints. \nMBCA was a critical partner in this research as the member organizations disseminated the survey link. The goal of 500 responses was received in one day\, indicating a high interest in the topic. \nWith the research completed and the data analyzed\, RAN is eager to share the information with the MBCA. RAN’s partner in this work\, Carol White\, will present the research results\, including: \n\nHow endpoint concepts were considered\, described\, and tested\nUse of a cutting-edge research technique that allowed patients with MBC to convey what was most important to them\nResults for the total sample and key subgroups in terms of the importance of treatment information\nFamiliarity with endpoint language\n\nIn addition\, the research team (Elda Railey\, Mary Lou Smith\, Carol White) will discuss a summary and implications. They are eager to hear MBCA reactions and thoughts in the interest of ensuring that this important information is used to inform trial design and communication.
